The non-profit educational organization SAF (Study Abroad Foundation) might be of assistance to students who elect to study abroad at their own expense rather than participating in the various foreign exchange programs that we offer.

If you wish to study abroad (short- or long-term) at your own expense in English-speaking countries, you may consult with SAF beforehand. In this case, you will not need to follow any procedures set by TUS and would deal directly with SAF.

The non-profit organization SAF was founded in 2000 and is based in Indianapolis in the United States. They have study abroad programs in six English speaking nations (United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and Ireland) for students enrolled in Asian universities. They have offices not only in Japan, but also in South Korea, China, and Taiwan. If you wish to study abroad at an affiliate school of the SAF, you will have to take a leave of absence from TUS. However, there are certain benefits from taking this route:

  1. Selecting where to study abroad through direct interviews,
  2. Obtaining detailed information of your destination school through SAF,
  3. Application procedures are relatively simple (one application can be sent to up to three different schools at once),
  4. Programs to improve your English skills, course completion programs, or a combination of both for a wider variety of ways to study abroad, and
  5. More intricate support before you head off to study abroad.
